Who Made my Food??

Remember the last time you ate Chinese food? Maybe you do. How great was it? Probably good enough that just by thinking about it is making you hungry. I know right, they are delicious. Now do you remember the person who is behind this greatness of fixing your food for you? OR do you even know him/her or ever care to know about them in general. Little sad but we usually don’t.

However today here I will introduce Ofelio Condido Martinez. He is the head chef at Asian CafĂ© in Topeka, KS. He is responsible for all the cooking and most of the kitchen stuff. He moved in United States from Mexico about 20 years ago. Ofelio never went to culinary school or have any kind of degree in his profession. Talking with him, I found out he kind of start picking it up since he start working in here 15 years back. Now he knows how to make the whole menu and doing great in his job. As he is the most experienced one in the kitchen, he is also the trainer for the newly hired trainee. Everything in that restaurant is made from scratch, nothing is premade. Ofelio is doing great job in processing the food from beginning to the plate. He mentioned he likes perfection, even if the onions or the tomatoes are not chopped evenly it bothers him. His least favorite thing is, when someone talks behind his back it makes him extremely upset. In his word “say it in my face, or go home”, which I found was very interesting. He is very loyal to his employer, he said his boss have never problem with him about his work. His job is very flexible for him. When any guest comes to eat, like the food and compliments, Ofelio feels like he has reached his goal.

I love Chinese food, for people like Ofelio we still get to eat those whenever we want to. I appreciate their service.

Meet John

Beautiful Washburn

We Ichabod’s are truly blessed with such a beautiful campus of Washburn University. A facility like this requires a lot of maintenance, which leads to a need of a lot of staff member. I wonder how many of us do know how many of them, who actually works hard to keep our campus this neat, clean and beautiful for us.

John Jirik on duty
Here today I will introduce you guys with one of them who is been serving us for last six month. John Jirik, who has lived most of his life here in Topeka is a Ground Keeper at Washburn University. He works here full time. His highest level of education is, he graduated high school. He likes staying happy and being positive all the time. When he manage to pick up the ground full of dry leaves and makes it look sharp again he feels he reached his goal for the day. He is a music lover, he listens to his Progressive Rock music through his headphone during work and turns it up when he goes home. He seems to be a really chill person, he waves at every single car passes by. I asked him, do all of them wave you back? He said most of them does and the ones does not, he feels sorry for them. Overall he likes his job, because that’s what he has done for most of his life. However, his least favorite thing on his job is picking up trash because he said there is trashcan everywhere for a reason, still he does not mind doing it. Compliments makes him happy and encourages him to keep going and do better. Jirik mentioned they are provided with the best equipment and machineries by the university. He is well paid also for what he does.

My selfie with John
John is playing a very important role around us is what I think. If people like him quit doing there their job, guess who have to take care of all this?
