Yes!! Fried Chicken

How does fried chicken sounds for dinner? Delicious, I know Right! After a long day at work, stop by a chicken place drive thru to get some fried chicken on our way back home cannot go wrong. Now, let’s take few second for the person who is behind that kitchen door, in front of the 340degree heated fryer preparing that yummy fried chicken for us.
Nazma
Her name is Nazma Akter Khaton. Moved in United States with her husband as an immigrant about 10years ago. She had her dream, wish and hope like any other immigrants of living a better life in one of the best nation in the world. First she moved in with some of her relatives in California, did not work out well. Then she moved to Texas with some other family friends. There she worked in a dry cleaner place for 3 years. However, the struggle did not seemed to get any better for a women, who do not speak or have good understand of English with a sick husband. For some extra help finally she comes to Topeka, KS to her nephew. They were very nice to them, backed them up in every situation and helped her finding a job at Church’s Chicken as a cook. She worked here ever since. First she had trouble picking it up, later she got trained and now she is one of the best cook of this place. She is a full time employee, works six days week. If you are form Topeka and had chicken from Church’s Chicken located at 10th street, most chance is she made it. She is cooking here for over 4 years now.
Work Flow
She like what she does, she is responsible for preparing all the chicken both spicy and regular recipe, chicken tenders, livers, gizzards, and wings from scratch. She also do a lot of cleaning in here, but changing trash is her least favorite task. The crew is amazing she works with, they are very chill, even the person who owns the place. It is her best job ever and she’s glad to have it. Her goal is to cook small batches more often, so the guests get served with hot and fresh chicken. Nazma is very picky about holding time and temperature, which she is supposed to be according to the food health code. Sometime it’s hard to keep up when the business gets really busy, but she improvise and manage to make it work of her best.
It makes her really happy when someone compliments her, as she doing a great job. It encourages her to keep up the good work or even better if possible. Another thing I learned about this lady is, since she started working here she never missed a day at work so far. She cares about her job and works hard for it. It was kind of a emotional moment when she said how much she miss Bangladesh.

She puts a lot of effort to provide fried chicken for hundreds of people who goes there every day. She is an amazing person to talk with. In your next visit at Church’s Chicken don't forget to say Hello to Nazma.

The Happy Guy Richard

One of my earlier post was about a stuff member of Washburn. Washburn has a pretty big campus where have a lot of people for maintenance. Today here I will introduce you guys with another wonderful guy, who provides us with a nice clean facility.
Richard Schumacher
The name is Richard Schumacher. Work as a custodian of the Henderson building at Washburn University. He was born in Selina, Ks and raised in Topeka Ks. He spend most of his life in the town. He graduated from Hayden High School, went to college but didn’t get to finish it. Richard has good skill with motor vehicle, therefore he used to own an automobile shop. However it didn’t work very well for him, so he quit. His goal was to open his own shop, which he did very successfully but closed it later. Because he found this job at Washburn. It seems a better opportunity to him, good pay, facility, retirement plan, less stress and things of that nature. This job is the best job he have in his life. He loves working here, he mentioned the students, and faculty members are great in here. He never felt disrespected by anyone around (Good job Ichabod’s, let’s keep it up).
He is fairly new, works full time. Just from my curiosity I asked, if there is anything he would like to change about his job? He replied; University had done it for so long that they had figured it out very well. He is provided with all the up to date equipment that is out there for that specific task. Everything has a dark side as well, in that case I wanted to know his least favorite task in his duty. Now, He is in charge of cleaning the Mabee Library’s bathrooms during the weekends. He doesn’t mind doing it, but sometimes it gets gross especially the Men. We can make it a little easier for those people just by doing what we are actually supposed to do like we do at home. After all we are the ones who will be reusing it later on.
Richard is very friendly to talk with. Best thing about him in my opinion, he is very grateful with what he have. I am pretty sure this guy was smiling the entire time I was talking with him. I am glad I had a chance to talk with him. Another thing I found very interesting is “he was asking me questions as well.” All over he is an amazing guy who is performing a very important role here.
MESSAGE FOR DR. STOVER from RICHARD SCHUMACHER: He requested me to let Dr. Stover  know that Richard is her custodian. He thinks Dr. Stover is AWESOME!

Do you know them?

Everywhere we go, our one of the first expectation about the place is cleanness. If the facility is nasty, we probably do not want to go back in there, on the other hand a clean place can create a very good impression to people. Today I will talk a little bit about some of the stuff members of “West Ridge Mall” who I met this week.
"West Ridge Mall" at Topeka KS, has a pretty big crew of stuff members. Chris Proctor, Rusty Scot, Brenda is a part of the crew, who works as janitors in there. They all have vocational training. They all like their job, because it has different kind of work environment to work at. They have a very fun crew, they play around with each other, give each other hard time, help themselves, also cooperative to one another, what helps them to work as a team. Keeping a place clean all the time is not that easy what it sounds like. Rusty who used to work for school district said, “its easy to deal with mall kids then school kids. It is not something he is very big fan of but however when he get done cleaning the mall restrooms he feels accomplished. Chris is little picky, it makes him happy when he gets scheduled for something he likes doing at work, which doesn’t not happens very often. But still he do what he gets schedule for and does a great job at it, no one complains. On the other side, what Brenda finds a little challenging at the job is, when she has to pull long hour shifts and have to keep up with everything.” They are provided with the latest equipment to work with from the mall. GREAT!
One of my question for them was if anyone gets disrespectful at them for what they do. Rusty replied immediately that he will call the mall security to take care of it. Although this doesn’t happen a whole lot. Peoples are busy now days.
They do the dusting, moping, cleaning the tables at the food court, changing the trash, cleaning the bathrooms and all that. Out of the list one thing common about all of them was, their least favorite task to do is restrooms. Then Brenda also added “bathrooms are worse unless someone puke and they have to take care of that. The puke conversation went for a while. I am not going into detail, since I think I made my point.
What upsets them was people leaves their trashes on the table instead of throwing the trash and leaving them tray where they supposed to like any other fast food. I strongly agree with them because its food court not a fancy restaurant. We all know the rule but seems to forget sometime. They said that “it would be nice, if people leaves more tips on the table.”
It was great talking to these people until their manager showed up and said “Hurry up They Need to Get Back to Work.” FYI: she was kidding. They were very friendly to talk with. Just by talking with them I can tell they are good people. Often we do not realize how much they do for us. Just think for a second, how you would feel if:
# You walk in the mall restroom and find out its dirty/nasty, would you use it?
# After spending money getting your favorite meal, you cannot find a nice clean spot to seat and enjoy it, will it ruin your mood or nah?
This is the group of people who saves us from facing those terrible situation. Cleaning is no fun, but these awesome people are very enthusiastic. We should admire them and make them realize to us They Matters!
